SUMMARY OF INVENTION The present invention is directed to coatings with lubricating properties which may be applied by a variety of methods to surfaces of various configurations to provide a law friction surface. The coatings of the invention are useful as self-lubricating coatings for bearings and the like.
Bearings coated with coatings described herein have been found to have good wear performance even under high pressure and high temperature conditions required for qualification to military specifications. Such test conditions are more stringent than required for most applications, and are therefore a desirable benchmark to measure wear performance. A roller bearing with the coating applied to the inside diameter of the inner race may be capable of being removed from a shaft during maintenance, rather than being cut from the shaft and thereby destroyed. Self-lubricating plain bearings have a lubricant contained within the bearing walls. The first, and most common, are sintered metal bearings, which have porous walls. The porous walls draw oil in via capillary action and release the oil when pressure or heat is applied. An example of a sintered metal bearing in action can be seen in self-lubricating chains, which require no additional lubrication during operation. Another form is a solid one-piece metal bushing with a figure eight groove channel on the inner diameter that is filled with graphite. A similar bearing replaces the figure eight groove with holes plugged with graphite. The last form is a plastic bearing, which has the lubricant molded into the bearing.

A. A GRAPHALLOY bushing needs to be retained in its housing via an interference fit. The coefficient of thermal expansion of GRAPHALLOY material grades is low relative to steel and other housing materials. In order to maintain retention at elevated temperatures, the initial press fit needs to be sufficient to overcome this difference. A. The -XXX at the end of a GRAPHALLOY part number is a place holder for the material grade designation. As we have many different GRAPHALLOY material grades, we endeavor to find the most appropriate material grade for the application that the bushing will be used in. Our Engineering Group will help you select the grade based on our prior experience in similar applications. The material grade selection may also affect the bushing OD and ID dimensions by a slight amount as some applications require more or less press fit or running clearance. The dimensions of PV − (N/m2) × (m/s) are the dimensions of the energy flux. This is to be expected as the energy lost to friction and subsequently dissipated as heat should be proportional to the frictional force multiplied by the sliding distance. The energy lost per unit time, per unit area of contact, should be the product of the unit load, coefficient of friction and sliding velocity. As such, PV should give a good indication of the heat produced in a bearing. If the bearing dissipates heat at a constant rate, then PV should be the measure of the pressure and sliding velocity that the bearing can tolerate. The only complication is that the coefficient of friction is not constant but changes with speed and the contact pressure. Therefore it is justifiable to take the PV values with some reserve. An important distinction to make is that self-lubricating bearings are not bearings that come pre-applied with grease or oil lubricant – these bearings are instead referred to as prelubricated bearings. Prelubricated bearings will require relubrication at some point in their service life.
Manganese bronzes are used extensively in fresh water applications, especially where toughness and shock resistance are necessary. Tin bronzes, which offer high resistance to impingement corrosion, and leaded tin bronzes, which provide good embedability and tolerate greater shaft misalignment, are generally limited to low and moderate bearing loads. Aluminum bronzes, capable of much higher bearing loads, are widely used in both fresh water and marine applications. Because seawater is an excellent electrolyte, severe galvanic corrosion often occurs when two dissimilar metals are coupled together. Aluminum bronzes provide high resistance to galvanic action, as very minor potentials are generated between aluminum bronze and Monel, Inconel, nickel or stainless steel. Most aluminum bronzes offer good resistance to creep, biofouling, cavitations, impingement corrosion and chemical attack. LUBRON AQ bearings are not affected by most harsh or corrosive environments.
